2008 the year of Rich Internet Applications? (0)

There is an awful lot of hype about Rich Internet Applications (RIA) at the moment, and it is one of the 'big' competitive battlegrounds between Adobe and Microsoft. I think that the RIA is one of the most exciting technologies in development at the moment and we'll start to see some rich web sites this year that go beyond Flash games or movies.

This is one of the big buzz words in the database world at the moment. It can mean many different things, at the high end we could be referring to the results of processes such as data mining, whereas I tend to think of it as the value gained from very specific targeted queries that you may well have turned into a report.

Give me the ... silverlight (0)

Silverlight is a new Microsoft technology which is all set to rival Adobe Flash for creating rich interactive web sites. It's built on top of and is a sub-set of, existing technologies namely, .Net and WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation a new presentation sub-system which is part of .Net 3). The first version is mostly geared towards streaming media (such as video or sound although I've spotted some interesting animations, check out our own on our home page), while the next version (1.1) will allow for scripting using C# which will, I think, really open things up and allow Silverlight to rival Flash in what it is capable of.
